How the food you eat can impact your feminine health

We know that eating fatty foods can have a detrimental effect on cardiovascular health. We know that drinking excessive amounts of alcohol can have a detrimental effect on the liver. But did you know that the food you eat can also affect your vaginal health? We’ve discovered that there are actually components in certain foods that can change the scent and taste of your vagina. Wait, what?! Let's reread that.

Certain foods can change the scent and taste of your vagina.

Incredible, right?

Before we dive into what foods can change the scent and taste of your vagina, let's first make sure we understand our anatomy. We tend to generalize our vagina, calling the beautiful lady in entirety – a vagina, when in fact, this is slightly incorrect. When you stand naked in front of a mirror, which I hope everyone does, what you see is actually your vulva. Depending on the style and cut of your pubic hair of course. Check out the vulva vs. vagina blog for more down there details.

What foods can change the scent and taste of your vagina?

Just like a big cup of coffee changes the way your breath smells, coffee can also change your vaginal scent and taste. A study done at Oregon State University stated that foods with strong scents or flavors can change the smell of your vagina. Garlic, onions, asparagus, coffee and strong spices are the key players, while foods like whole grains, fruits, and vegetables tend to lead to a more mild or sweeter vaginal scent. Eating yogurt with live cultures is a great way to sweeten the smell and taste of your hoohoo, as well as help prevent yeast infections.

Your vagina tends to have an acidic pH, which helps protect against infection. There are also a number of healthy bacteria in your vagina that keep things in balance. Certain foods can throw off this delicate balance, thus causing your scent and taste “down there” to be less than pleasant. The good news is if you do choose to indulge in these foods, any changes in your vagina should only last about two or three days. Drinking lots of water can also help dilute any strong odor that is still lingering.

Keep in mind, any change in vaginal scent should be given serious consideration. Not all unpleasant scents are due to food intake. There may very well be a medical condition such as a yeast infection or STD that is the culprit. When in doubt, definitely consult your physician and see what’s up.

So the next time you’re on a date and are thinking about ordering the spicy garlic shrimp, you may want to reconsider… especially if you’re planning on ‘dessert’ afterwards.
